How this is calculated
What this number is, and what it is not
It is an indicative construction cost band for the wall itself, on a wall-face-area basis. It is not a quote, not a fixed price, and not a total project cost. It does not include the site works around the wall, and it cannot account for anything a quoter would see on site. Two walls with identical dimensions on different blocks can be thousands of dollars apart.
The formula
Wall face area = height at the tallest point multiplied by length. Indicative cost = face area multiplied by the low and high ends of the material band. A wall 1.2 metres high and 10 metres long is 12 square metres of face, and at a concrete sleeper band of $550 to $700 per square metre that gives $6,600 to $8,400. Nothing else is applied: no access multiplier, no regional loading, no contingency. Adding coefficients we cannot source would make the number look more precise without making it more accurate.
Where the benchmark figures come from
The five material bands are the indicative per square metre ranges recorded in our retaining walls knowledge base for the Australian market: rock and boulder $150 to $300, gabion $250 to $430, timber sleeper $300 to $450, concrete sleeper $550 to $700, and core-filled besser block $550 to $750. There are no other coefficients in this tool. The assumption set: what is held constant and what is ignored
The assumptions are deliberately few. It assumes a wall of uniform height along its length, which almost no real wall is, so on a stepped or sloping run the result will read high. It ignores excavation and spoil removal, subsoil drainage and its outlet, imported backfill, engineering design and certification, council and certifier fees, demolition and disposal of an existing wall, machine access constraints, ground and rock variability, capping and finishes, and render. It also ignores GST. Every one of those is a real line item, and several of them are the reason two quotes differ.
What this means for retaining wall cost per metre
People search for a per-metre figure and quotes come back per square metre of face, which is why two numbers that look wildly different often are not. Divide the band above by the length of your wall and you have the per-lineal-metre equivalent for your height. A 1.2 metre high concrete sleeper wall works out around $660 to $840 per lineal metre on these bands, while the same material at 600 millimetres high is roughly half that. The material rate did not change; the face area did.
Before you rely on the number
Settle the approval position first. Sunshine Coast Regional Council states you must have a building permit before construction, modification or repair of most retaining walls, and council approval as a concurrence agency applies over 2 metres.
